As civilization progresses, we as humans continue to optimise food and agricultural production. The invention of tools and utilities that allow for mass production has had unforeseen consequences. As consumers, it is less of an obligation for us to understand the circumstances in which our food is produced and how our choices impact the economy, the environment, and the world. Although, food and agriculture is a complex problem that affects every individual around the world to some degree. Any change to the way we currently address health, nutrition, or production has the potential to inadvertently worsen the situation for individuals. In addition, corporations and organizations who have a vested interest in promoting a specific dietary recommendation often abuse politics and exacerbate the already difficult dilemma for their own private gains.

As people eat food they seldom consider where the food came from, what were the conditions in which it was produced, or the methods by which it was obtained. Eating has become a thoughtless act Berry claims. He goes on to say, “The streamlining of food production has caused consumers to become ignorant to the ‘biological reality’ of the production of food.” The conditions of food suffer with scale e.g.“4 kilometers of cabbage dependent on chemicals” or “cows so close together they are dependent on antibiotics and other drugs.” The food industry is not concerned about quality and health of their food or customers, they are concerned rather with volume and price. Through corporations goal to meet demand the quality of food and life for livestock has decreased drastically. The consumer has to become conscious about what they are eating and their associated consequences, Berry exclaims.
