“The future of nursing depends very much on the future of the U.S. health care system” (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2014, p. 161). While institutions continue to push reforms, which focus on cost-containment, the cost of accessing, as well as the quality of care, or lack of, could result in even greater shortages of nursing staff. Therefore, the optimal goal is to find a happy medium, with the least amount of compromises, relating to cost, quality, and access, while improving all three (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2014, p. 161). Some provisions in the healthcare reform laws, which should be of interest to nurses include: the formation of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMI), which focuses on innovative ways to reduce Medicare spending, while maintaining or improving quality, and by testing payment and service delivery models, as well as bundling of healthcare services into one payment. In addition, workforce-related provisions are included in the healthcare reform, in order to recruit more doctors, physician assistants, and nurses in to the primary care environment (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2014, pp. 166-167). Moreover, the multitude of opportunities available, due to the provisions in the healthcare reform, provide nurses a chance “to shape the future of the health care delivery system and their places in it” (Mason, Leavitt, & Chaffee, 2014, p. 167).
