Appointed and hybrid boards are two types of board formations that may have positive or negative effects on the organizations’ ability to fulfill its mission. Board members may be appointed by an authority outside the organization. For instance, a governor may appoint a member to a state university board of directors. However, nonprofit boards are rarely comprised of totally appointed members. Hybrid boards may consist of elected members, appointed members and others serving by virtue of their status or position.
Nonprofit board members must deal with securing donations, marketing and ensuring the accountability of the organization they serve. Michael Worth (2014) shows the advantages and disadvantages of different types of boards (See Table 2). In the case of both appointed and hybrid boards, appointed members who serve because of the status or position they hold may not be dedicated to the organization or possess the ability and availability to perform their duties. The board consist of six elected members and three appointed members. The six elected board members where from County Council districts. The other three members were appointed by Governor Larry Hogan. The members all acknowledged that they were facing a number of difficult challenges and they all looked forward to making the best choice for the school system. It took six years for the board to be put in place after the passing of the legislation six years ago. The board will also consist of Gene Hatcher, a rising senior at a local high school, who will represent about 38,000 student.
