The guard pulled the tape off of the lock and continued on his rounds. Later that night, the guard returned to the basement and found the lock was taped over again. This time, he didn’t hesitate and phoned the cops. The guard was right to phone the police because while he was making his rounds five men had snuck in and were then trying to break into one of the offices (Kilian 1). Now, these men were not ordinary burglars. The offices they were trying to break into belonged to the Democratic National Committee. Because of this, President Nixon released a statement denying that the White House had been involved in the break-in (Kilian 5). At this point, the White House could have told the public the truth about their involvement in Watergate and there may have been very different results.
