The authors provide credible resources that show how oppression causes devastation and damage to a client’s environment, produces physiological stress responses and psychological trauma. The author’s discuss previous studies that focused on two specific forms of oppression that have a pathogenic impact on clients: (1) poverty and (2) racism. The authors of this article described various studies that showed valid results of the effects that poverty has on a client’s well-being, how it produces emotional distress, and causes major depression. In addition to poverty, racism is another factor that the authors provided research and studies on to show the affect it has on clients. Research shows that racial discrimination has been correlated with increased levels of physical and mental stress, such as, paranoia, fear, headaches and backaches. The authors paint a clear picture to show how much clients experience trauma and how social workers must endure this trauma with them in order to enhance their well-being. Wheeler and McClain (2015) shows that the “primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basis needs of all people; all while challenging social injustice” (p.201-202). However, research shows within this article that social workers need to be aware of their own personal struggle that may deeply affect the efficiency of the work
