This weeks reading, Walking This Path Together by Kundouqk and Qwel’shi’yah’maht, was very insightful to the Anti-Oppressive practises across Canada. I appreciated the in depth detail into indigenous studies, and could easily see the transition to all cultures. I was taken by the phrase, “best interest of the child”, as I have heard this phrase many times over my lifetime. But I would like to understand why red and history are in the east. Better still; if there were anyone who can provide reasoning behind the various placements of each, I would love to learn more.

Overall, I found the reading interesting and provides an excellent support for a good understanding the role of a social worker when working with marginalized individuals and groups. It provided an understanding for a new social worker, to aid and guide them through their practice. I too was moved by Gord Bruyere’s words, “I teach because I do not want to see any more of our children harmed.” (p.41) This comment shows great wisdom of knowledge and represents his perseverance to change the future through

S. 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states everyone has the right to life, liberty and justice and may not be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice. From my understanding, these rights may be taken away to deliver justice; so in accordance to subsection 17(5) of the Act, the rights stated in s. 7 are taken away by subsection 17(5) of the Act such that aboriginals may not lose their culture and heritage. In the case of Yves De Clerico and Madeline Haque v. Ontario (Children and Youth Services) and Justin Benoit, subsection 17(5) of the act does infringe s. 7 of the charter and cannot be justified because a) all steps have been taken by Yves De Clerico and Madeline Haque to preserve Jeffrey’s culture and heritage, and b) Yves and Madeline are better fit to be parental guardians for Jeffrey than Justin Benoit due to his lack of experience and his history of drug abuse, in addition to not being present in Jeffrey’s life, therefore there is no justice owed to him (Justin) with regards of having the right to take care of his…

Personal Views I completely agree with Vanier and his views on diversity. I do believe that if we are able to transcend ourselves and begin to look at others the way God views them, as a creation in his likeness, we will be transformed internally. I have found complete freedom in my life when I have extended only love for other human beings and forced the fears and prejudices out of my mind and actions. I will say that this can be an extremely difficult thing to do, it is seemingly against our very nature, and can be very difficult to accomplish.…
