There is an image in America of what a family should look like: one mother, one father, a couple of children and perhaps the family dog. The reality of what makes a family, however, is much more complex. In the book Plainsong by Kent Haruf, the reader discovers a variety of families, that are made up in a multitude of different ways. While some of these families are defined by blood relation, almost all of them differ in some way from the traditional conception of the family unit. The reasons that these family groupings come about are as varied as the families that they create, but in the end, they fulfill the needs of the family members regardless of the existence, or lack, of blood ties.…
The 1950's nuclear family was once ideal. How individuals view marriage has changed since then. There are more single parent homes, which could be due to more women being educated and less dependent on males. More individuals cohabit as opposed to being married like those in the 1950s. This is due to the stigma of sex outside of marriage being reduced.…
Today, television is an incredibly large part of basic American culture, with many people’s lives revolving completely around the little screens, or sometimes large, that dominate nearly every single living room in the modern family’s home. But, in the late 1940s, when TV was first introduced, this wasn’t the case. Television has always been on a rollercoaster between fads, and new technologies introduced throughout the decades. But one of the overall most influential decades for the television and the evolution of the entertainment aired for the people through it.…

The traditional family meal today has drastically changed since the 1950s. The typical families in the 1950s usually meet around the table for dinner and discuss their day. The evening meal is like a chance to gather the little tribe together and to reconnect with one another. The conversations are spontaneous and unpredictable however, all negative topics are discouraged. It also seems like a reward for the day’s hard work.…
Families change throughout the centuries, each conforming to society or breaking away from societal norms. In the 1950s, most families followed the “cookie cutter” way, which means many families were the same. Compared to today’s families, one can say that families have become very different from what they used to be. In today’s society, we have families that are bi-racial, having either gay or lesbian parents, having a single mother of father; these types of families were not as popular in the 1950’s. Families during the 1950’s were traditional and most families conformed to society.…
Family Values Nostalgia for the 1950s is real and deserves to be taken seriously, but it usually shouldn 't be taken literally. (pg.33 of What we really miss about the 1950’s) Growing up in a two parent household who base their parenting abilities on what the Bible has to say, can relate a lot to being in the 1950s. It has a lot of the same values work hard, love unconditionally, and don 't sin. Today’s society with all the electronics that we have makes it very difficult to get tasks accomplished. My parents have stressed in all of us kids to work hard for what we want.…

Family therapy has been around since the early 20th century, formal development dates to the 1940s and early 1950s when the American Association of Marriage Counselors and other institutions began their work with couples and families. Just as in individual therapy, family therapy has a vast amount of theorist whom have developed models to be used in settings where fellow professionals can understand and help families looking to attend therapy as a unit. Two of those family therapy models are the transgenerational models, specifically family systems theory and the structural model. First, we will discuss the transgenerational models before discussing the structural model.…

This picture appears to present an image of a typical day in the life of a family in the 1970’s. The children are playing outside in the fresh air, under the watchful eyes of their parents. In this image, a mother and father are standing in front of their home. Their home is modest, but well cared for.…

There are various types of families in society and each individual has their own opinion regarding what constitutes a “family.” In order to define my family, I have referred to recent classroom discussions for support. My parents and two younger siblings make up the nuclear part of my family. With the exception of a few individuals, my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents make up my extended biological family. Certain friends of mine are also considered members of my extended family; however, I consider them to be socially related to me.…
