There are various types of families in society and each individual has their own opinion regarding what constitutes a “family.” In order to define my family, I have referred to recent classroom discussions for support. My parents and two younger siblings make up the nuclear part of my family. With the exception of a few individuals, my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents make up my extended biological family. Certain friends of mine are also considered members of my extended family; however, I consider them to be socially related to me. My brother does not live with us anymore, but I still consider him to be part of my nuclear family. The nuclear members of my family are biologically related to me and the years of growing up together in the same home has allowed for a loving, nurturing, and caring connection to be made between us. This bond has allowed us to overcome economic and personal problems within the privacy of our home, which leads me to consider every member of my nuclear family as private. I find solace in knowing that I can turn to my siblings and parents when I have a personal problem without fearing that my trust will be jeopardized. I befriended these two individuals many years ago, and I have helped them out through personal and economic hardships. Similarly, they have helped me out during some of my most difficult times. Although these particular family members are part of my extended family, I must consider them to be public pieces. In my opinion, these individuals morphed into my family as a result of my interactions with society. Their disposition as public pieces means that they are often not part of family functions, special events, and holiday dinners like the other members of my extended family who are considered private. In fact, these socially related family members are not always immediately privy to important familial issues, such as the birth, illness, or death of another family
