Hair styles that cause traction alopecia
Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss that results when hair is subjected to stress and tension for prolonged periods. This prolonged stress and tension from pulling hair too tightly, causes the hair to be uprooted from the hair follicle and the scalp becomes scarred. Damage to the scalp and follicle may or may not be permanent which means your hair may or may not grow back.
The overwhelming majority of those who suffer from traction alopecia are black women. This type of hair loss is so widespread among those with black hair because the hair styles and styling practices that give rise to traction alopecia are most common within the black hair community. Weaves, extensions, tight ponytails, locs and corn rows are common hairstyles worn by black women and if these styles are done too tightly then traction alopecia is the inevitable result.

There are five categories that can trigger pulling: environmental, motoric, sensory, affective, and cognitive (Stemberger, R.M.T., Stein, D.J., & Mansueto, C.S. 2013 cited in Dia…
