But it was a time of vague optimism for some of the people: Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself.” After researching the Great Depression, I discovered that the quote, “We have nothing to fear, but fear itself” is the most famous phrase from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first inaugural speech. FDR gave his inaugural speech after his election in 1932. From this, we can conclude that the story began in 1933.

Page #33 “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Atticus is giving Scout moral advice that I believe could come back up later in the book. Scout seems to have a hard time learning this lesson.

Page #42 “Calpurnia appeared in the front door and yelled, ‘Lemonade time! You all get in outa that hot sun ‘fore you fry alive!’” This shows that Maycomb is a typical town in the south during the depression.

This conversation occurs after Scout has temperarily subdued the potentially dangerous crowd of men outside the jailhouse wanting to kill Tom Robinson. Scout realizes something is wrong and reaches out to a man in the group, Mr. Cunningham. She does as she has been told and tries to connect with him by talking about his son who is a schoolmate of hers. Unknowingly, Scout appeals to the man's sense of humanity and forces him to realize he must behave properly and leave Atticus and Tom Robinson alone.
