I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Throughout chapter 10 of the novel the children learn a plethora of secrets about their father. Next, Jen must read to Mrs. Dubose because he lost his temper and vandalized her yard. In chapter 13 the children are left alone with Calpurnia, and they learn a great deal about the black folk of Macomb. In the last two chapters, Aunt Alexandra moves in to give the children a feminine influence and a mob forms to harm Tom Robinson, but Scout manages to disperse the mob. In this journal, I will be characterizing and questioning. In this journal I will be characterizing Atticus. First, Atticus is moral. Throughout the entirety of the novel, Atticus is constantly preaching to look at life from the other person’s point …show more content…
It was not necessary for Calpurnia to teach her son to read, but she did it because she takes pride in her son’s achievements. She also wants the best for her children. A modern day of equivalent of Calpurnia teaching her son to read would be teaching your child a second language. Teaching your child how to do something that is not usually taught shows you take pride in them and their accomplishments. Next, Alexandra is a conformist. This is known as she tries to get Scout to become more feminine. Alexandra constantly reticules her clothes, and Scout’s tomboy tendencies. A parent should support their child no matter how outrageous their choice or lifestyle is. Trying to change how someone lives his or her life is like trying to change a dog into a cat. This simply will not happen. Without a doubt, Alexandra is a conformist as she attempts to turn Scout into a feminine woman, which was standard for the time. Not to mention, Alexandra is a racist. She is constantly complaining about how Atticus is ruining the family name because he took the Tom Robinson case. Alexandra also tries to convince Atticus to get rid of Calpurnia. Alexandra cannot be blamed for her racist mindset because that was customary at

Within this journal, I will be evaluating the themes in To Kill A Mockingbird. To begin, one of the themes displayed in the novel is the coexistence of the innocent and evil. One way the book conveys this is when the evil jury kills an innocent black man, Tom. I say this figuratively because the prison camp actually killed him, but the jury got him there. The jury knew Tom was innocent but back then, blacks were always guilty no matter the situaton.…

Impacts of Atticus’s Philosophy Atticus Finch lives by a very simple philosophy, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”. This is a great way that Atticus lives his life, because it is impossible to fully understand why a person is the way they are until one has been in their skin and has seen the things that they have seen and experienced. Atticus Finch is a very honorable person because of the ways that he models his personal values, for specifically Scout and Jem to see and they will bring these pieces of advice and good leadership into their own adult lives. To begin with, Atticus’s values and moral choices impact Scout a lot because she grows…

“Aunt Alexandra fitted into the world of Maycomb like a hand into a glove, but never into the world of Jem and me. I so often wondered how she and could be Atticus’s and Uncle Jack’s sister that i revived half-remembered tales of changelings and mandrake roots that Jem had spun long ago.” (Lee 149) Scout does not think that Aunt Alexandra belongs with them, and one of the reasons is that she is judgemental. If a girl laughed in the church choir Alexandra wouldstart talking about how every family has it’s streaks.…

At first, Scout was not thrilled Aunt Alexandra was moving in, but I think as time is going on they are starting to adjust to the situation. She also would not let Scout sit with the adult because she is not mature enough. That made scout feel bad because she had to sit and eat all by herself. Sometimes when the kids would do something that Aunt Alexandra would not like, she would tell Atticus to yell at his kids to tell them that is was wrong. Atticus would always try to make a joke out of it, but scout said that was more of a woman’s job.…
