American politician, Hillary Clinton once said, “We are a country where people of all backgrounds, all religions, can make a home. America was built by immigrants” (Clinton). Afterall, the United States was created by immigrants who came in to form their own way of life, and practiced religions they believed in. But, in America today it seems as if people are making stereotypes once they see a specific religious group. Even though, they came from a group of people who helped shape this country that we call the United States of America. Religious discrimination is a major issue in America today. Different religion groups such as Christians and Muslims have to face this hostility in their everyday lives. In American, movie producers have acted …show more content…
In the scene when Julius tells Gary that “Attitude reflects leadership,” Gary was telling Julius that the black players need to start covering for the white players, but Gary wasn’t even covering for the black players. Therefore, Gary was being racist. Also, in the locker room scene Gary felt that Blue was criticizing his mom, but he soon realized that it was a momma joke. Therefore, as the film went on Gary starts to appreciate cultural differences. Another example in the film that does a great job of dealing with the topic of discrimination is when all the players meet in the auditorium; they realize that society did not want them to be together because of racial discrimination. This idea initially lead the players to have fear which was turning into hatred. Moreover, the players were integrated and started to learn and adapt to one another; breaking the chain of hatred early on. I think that this part of the film shows how others might be ignorant about a topic you’re educated on, therefore, you don’t have to base your opinion off of theirs if you’re knowledgeable about that subject. Integration built friendships in the film. For example, when Gary got into a car accident, Gary told Julius, “I was afraid of you, I only saw what I was afraid of, and now I know I was only hating on my brother.” This scene displayed the idea that being afraid of someone because they’re …show more content…

In the early to mid 1900’s racism was a problem in the United States of America, where minority groups were treated poorly for being apart of a minority. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the many people to help abolish segregation, and he was supporting all minorities not just the black people. Remember the Titans took place during this time of segregation. The Titans-football team- was the only team in the state to have black and white americans play together. Coach Boone got rid of segregation on his team by 1 getting the players to get along, 2 he got them to respect each other, and 3 getting them to judge each other on their skill and personality instead of their skin color.…

In today’s society, racism, prejudice, and stereotyping is often frowned upon and seen as politically incorrect. This wasn’t always the case, because just four decades ago, racism, prejudice and stereotyping was seen as a social norm. However, thanks to great leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Andrew Goodman and many others, we as people are allowed to live in a more diverse and welcoming environment that gives equal rights and respect to everyone no matter race, size, or country of origin. Although it is important to recognize the progress we have made throughout the years, it is also crucial that students are aware and understand the numerous obstacles that people of color had to go through, to further appreciate…

In today's society that's not always the case. People believe they are better than one another or think they should do things just because another person is. ‘’A Quilt of a Country’’ by Anna Quindlen describes America as an improbable idea. America is a nation that will never be perfect. While “ The Immigrant Contribution” by John F Kennedy talks about the melting pot.…

The movie Remember the Titans is an excellent example for sociological theories. Many topics can be observed within this movie, but two of the most prominent topics that we covered this semester are social structure, more specifically race and prejudices, and group processes, focusing on status construction. This movie takes place in a small town in North Carolina that has to deal with the shifting racial makeup of their football team, therefore high school, and therefore community. There is a lot of conflict not only between the different racial groups, but also within racial groups when people have different opinions of what is acceptable. The combination of the two racial groups leads to interesting observations of racial opinions and group…

Discriminatory/prejudicial behaviour can be further broken down into direct and indirect discrimination against a particular group. The three most notable prejudices and associated behaviours within Remember the Titans are racism, sexism and homophobia and harassment, name calling and gender stereotyping. An example of racism and harassment from the film comes in the scene where Coach Boones house gets damaged by a brick thrown by a passer-by as they call out “Coach Coon”. This direct discrimination can also be related back to the ‘ego-defence’ mechanism wherein a real or perceived threat causes feelings of anxiety (moral anxiety – fear of violating societal codes) and in order to reduce these negative emotions, we fall back into certain defence mechanisms.…

An example of this is the scene when all the boys are getting on the bus to go to the training camp. Inside the gym during the roll call, them boys again separated themselves because the thought of coming together was looked at as wicked and appalling. Racism was a natural emotion during this time period.…

Throughout history, the United States of America has been involved in numerous conflicts. These conflicts have involved cultures all over the world and as a result we often see prejudice in our own country. This prejudice is often directed towards the citizens that have cultural ties to the perceived enemy. Having such a diverse culture within the U.S. is considered to be a good thing, but during times of war it can trigger harsh and negative treatment towards individuals that are looked at as “them”. There have been countless times where America has mistreated its own citizens because they were thought to be in correlation with the enemy.…

Not getting support because of a stereotype is a confusing and scary place for a young child. As a kid I wanted to play basketball but my hobby, my daily life was taken away after my parents told me I can’t be playing that sport because sooner or later I’m going to come across a “nigger” that will cause me trouble in possibilities of robbing me, getting angry after a game and hitting me, and many more problems, maybe death. My developing brain created a fence around people of color, to stay my distance, change to a sport that will my race will be playing at my local park. The United States is often perceived as a melting pot for all ethnicities to have equal opportunities for success and wealth. The extent in which this total equality has been implemented into actual reality is rather sparse. As history supports, ethnicity and race are still associated with social and economic oppression and abuse. For members of the population to maintain the ancient idea that America is primarily a white country significantly causes new generations of Americans to wrongly regard and negatively perceive the next wave of immigrants. According to Lillian Rubin’s article “Is This a White Country or What?”, many American citizens are opposed to immigration, even though they too come from immigrant families.…

Giannetti defines ideology as, “a body of ideas reflecting the social needs and aspirations of an individual, group, class, or culture” (448). A film’s purpose is often reflected through the ideology it possesses and in this case, the ideology expresses the treatment of minorities in baseball culture. A League of their Own, The Perfect Game, and 42 all contain an explicit sense of ideology with a thematic orientation towards teaching people about treatment of minorities in baseball culture. A League of their Own is a film about the solution to keep baseball alive during WWII and that is to start a women’s baseball league. The Perfect Game is about a group of young boys from Monterrey, Mexico who aspire to be on a baseball team and when given…

America, “The Land of the Free,” is a home to many people of different race and ethnicity, and no matter how different one person may be, America has a notion of how “all men are created equal.” In the article “A Quilt of a Country,” Anna Quindlen, the author, makes the argument of how America contradicts itself by saying how “all men are created are equal,” however, the people living here are very discriminating towards each other because some people believe that the way they think is more superior than others. To begin with, Anna Quindlen uses a quote from a credible source in order to make what the person said have a bigger impact and have more meaning to it. Historian Daniel Boorstin states, “Of all the nations in the world, the United…
