Have you ever heard of Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? Well if you haven 't, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, “PTSD is a serious potentially debilitating condition that can occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a natural disaster, serious accident, terrorist incident, sudden death of a loved one, war, violent personal assault such as rape, or other life-threatening events. Research has recently shown that PTSD among military personnel may be a physical brain injury, specifically of damaged tissue, caused by blasts during combat.” Throughout The Things They Carried by Tim Obrien, Many American soldiers during the Vietnam war face emotional and psychological conditions. The story gives the readers a sense of feel on what it was like for soldiers coping with violence and death that they witnessed upon the war. Obrien not only talks about his physical and emotional experience with war, he goes in depth about the things they carried, the physical objects soldiers carried with them, not just weapons and such, the fear, love, memories, and dreams.
During the book you learn about what the title of the book truly means by "things they carried". What is being carried? By who? The American soldiers, the men carry up to 68 pounds on them and to add to that its hot as hell outside that 's making it even harder to carry.
