The United States is a democracy. This means that every citizen are involved in making decisions about the country 's affairs , by voting to elect representatives. Representatives are usually chosen from the democratic and republican political parties. In the United States a president is elected every four years . A president who has a served a term for four years has the option to run again in order to become president for another four years. After a president is elected for their second term they cannot run to become the president anymore. Barack Obama has been the president of the United States for the last eight years which means he served two terms. President Obama 's first term actions focused on the global financial crisis and included a major stimulus package, the partial extension of the Bush tax cuts, legislation to reform health care, a major financial regulation reform bill, and the end of a major US military presence in Iraq. President Obama´s second term addressed how our generation must find solutions to issues such as gun control , immigration reform and climate change. At the end of this year President Obama´s last term will officially be over. This upcoming November, majority of the citizens of the United States will vote for whom they believe should become president of the country.
