“Demoskratis”, from Greek “people hold power”, also known in modern English as Democracy, is a term used in politics to define the liberty of individuals to exercise their equal power within a society. While many believe that a developed society is a democratic society, it is not always true; in fact, many of so-called “developed countries” do not share equal power and opportunities among the population, which is one of the key aspect of the Democracy. Among these countries is the United States of America. The U.S. is for many the land of opportunities, the country where everything is possible, where the sky is the only limit. In fact, every person should be treated equally regardless of his race, ethnicity, religion, gender or age. The United States is one of the most multicultural countries in the world, being formed by the various immigrant who came in the country in search for a better life. However, inequality has been the cause of various revolutions, which have changed the face of the country throughout history. The dominant White race have mistreated and killed many people based on their ethnicity, religion, and gender. Looking back at the Declaration of Independence, it was stated that every man are equal. However, history also shows that the founding fathers themselves were slaveholders. In fact, many of them were against the abolition of slavery. This is an example of the hypocrisy of the U.S. government and the constitution. In more recent years, changes have been made regarding the racial issue however, it is still a major problem in the country: black men are often victims of police abuse; the rivalry against religious groups such as Muslims has led to stereotypes, which have made difficult the lives of many innocent people, who are subject to violence in various parts of the country. Another undemocratic aspect is the gender differences. Men and women within the same class are treated differently when it comes to the opportunity of work and salary. An average American does not have the freedom of expression and opportunity. This leads a country to be undemocratic, taking in consideration the definition of the term. However, the number of opportunities that are available should be a motivation for people to use best the type of education they can afford and the type of job they can get to become successful. It is much harder for a person to raise from the bottom and reach out the top, but it is not impossible. The lack of democracy doesn’t mean that people should not stand up for their rights.
