The “social stigma” connected to homosexuality causes a difficulty to identify homosexual subjects and learn to help the mental problems many homosexuals are having (Remafedi 331). To better understand the issues going on in the mind of a homosexual person, doctors must first obtain subjects. Surveying homosexual children is hampered because they tend to obscure themselves from scrutiny, for they have most likely been lambasted their whole life. The events that lead from the traumas tend to cause life alterations, and not for the best. Things such as “social isolation, running away, [and] prostitution” can be discovered by homosexuals more likely to a traumatic life, just as “compromised mental health, and sexually transmitted diseases” are a potential problem (Remafedi 331). Because these life compromising situations are more evident in homosexual adults, it would be a wise mindset to approach these complications from an early age. The possible prevention of these situations could, in theory, create a safer environment for homosexual adults, and upcoming adolescents. Lee A. Beaty gives many examples of literature on identifying homosexuality and acceptance. Beaty believes that there are certain steps into self-acceptance. The first step is: “identity awareness”, the individual knowing that they are different from the rest of the world. This step is crucial in the beginning of becoming an individualized homosexual. The second: “identity comparison”, discovering that they themselves may be a homosexual, but behaves as a heterosexual; and the third is: “identity tolerance”, realizing they are a homosexual. These two steps are paired together. They work together into deciding to become a homosexual. The next is: “identity acceptance”, beginning to explore the gay community; the fifth is: “identity pride”, becoming active within the gay community. These two are partners together as well, and they explore the new sexuality discovered. And finally: “synthesis”, the individual fully accepts themselves. By finally accepting themselves as homosexual, they can finally be their own identity. This is only one theory of how to lead to self-acceptance. There is a multitude of ways to lead one’s self into self-acceptance. By discovering one’s self as a homosexual at a young age and leading a path the sexual enlightenment.
