The third pearl of wisdom I learned from the course textbook is the Holding Principle, which is essentially “Never act until you are sure that what you are about to do is not sin” (Adams, 1979 p. 31). Although it is a basic understanding to not act in sin, putting it into practice can be hard. Temptation is a very real tool the devil uses to ensnare Christians and non-Christians alike. It entangles people in webs of deception, lies, manipulation, and compromise. An example of this would be committing adultery. If a married couple comes to counseling and one of them has committed adultery on the other, but they are willing to work through things and change, the holding principle is a great tool for them to use. It gives them a statement to read, memorize, and come back to when they face temptation. The bible also informs us that, “If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn 't do it, it is sin for them” (James 4:17). So, essentially the holding principle applies to everyone. We must hold ourselves accountable to the scriptures and to God. This accountability should not be looked at with dread but with encouragement that we have a measure by which we should act. Jesus Christ is our ultimate example because led a sinless life. If we are contemplating our actions, the holding principle reminds us to check with scripture to make absolutely certain what we are about to do is not sin.
