Core values and beliefs are important in a counseling relationship. Values are important because it helps a person to better understand themselves and what is Important to them as a person. A value that I hold that I think will influence my development of a counseling approach is acceptance. My counseling approach will include factors which contribute to showing the client acceptance, no matter what issue they are facing, as well as teaching the client how to accept themselves and their issues. A way my counseling approach will be shaped by commitment is, I will show the client at all times that I am committed to our counseling relationship and helping them with their issues. Trust is another value that I have. Without trust, I do not think that anything can be established. My counseling approach will be shaped by trust because I will show at all times over the course of the sessions, by showing effort and enthusiasm, as well as giving trust. A belief that I have is that all people have the ability within themselves to change. My counseling approach will be shaped by this belief because, I will use methods which can guide a person towards change. The techniques that I learned about in the course include: imaginal flooding, in-vivo therapies, dialectical persuasion, paradoxical tasks, and systematic desensitization. I chose the imaginal flooding technique because I would like to learn more about how this technique is executed and how effective it is. A counseling situation that this technique might be effective in is assisting someone suffering from depression. The use of in-vivo therapies stood out to me because I find amazing how a person is able to gradually get over the fear of something for a very long time by being exposed to the object more often. A counseling situation that this technique might be effective in is assisting someone suffering from a phobia. I chose the dialectical persuasion technique because it sounds like it would be challenging for the counselor to accept the client, but at the same point out inconsistencies in in actions, values, and beliefs. A counseling situation that this technique might be effective in is assisting someone suffering from eating disorders. Paradoxical tasks was a technique I chose because instead of asking the client or clients to stop their behaviors which are causing trouble, they are asked to continue them.
