Patrician Benner is a nursing theorist who developed the model “From Novice to Expert.” This paper is a research paper that will explore the theory and its application to nursing practice.
Patricia Benner was born in Hampton, Virginia and spent her childhood in the state of California. Marriner-Tomey & Alligood (2002) stated that Benner received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pasadena College in 1964, and earned a master’s degree in nursing, majoring in medical-surgical nursing from the University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing. In the year 1970, Benner began a background in the field of research in the School of Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco, and by 1989, was tenured to professor, where she teaches at the master’s and doctoral level, and serves on dissertation committee per year. Patricia Benner acknowledges that her nursing knowledge and way of thinking was greatly influenced by Virginia Henderson, who later wrote Benner’s “From Novice to Expert: Excellence and Power in Clinical Nursing Practice,” (Marriner-Tomey & Alligood, 2002, p. 166) might affect the practice and preparation of nurses for practice.
