Several of the characters in 10 Things I Hate About You not only have the same or similar names as the characters in “The Taming of the Shrew”, but they also have similar personalities. Major character, Kate, in the play goes by Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You. The two characters are almost identical in personality considering they are both the shrew of the story. Kate and Kat are both described as loud and opinionated, as well as antisocial and hard to get along with. Junger’s choice of Julia Stiles for Kat could not have been better. The fact that she appears naturally independent as well as her sassy attitude complete the character’s personality perfectly. Younger sister, Bianca, happens to go by the same name in both Shakespeare’s play and the movie. Bianca is the typical teenage girl in both pieces of literature. She is very social and has all of the guys drooling over her. Larisa Oleynik plays the role of this fun loving teenager. Again, I think Junger’s choice of actress is perfect for the part. Oleynik does a great job portraying that typical high school girl persona, which is exactly who Bianca would be in modern times. Other characters including Patrick/Petruchio, Cameron/Lucentio, and Joey/Hortensio also contribute similarly, not exactly, to 10 Things I Hate About You and “The Taming of the Shrew” based on their character traits and personalities.
