The Nobility class was the highest and had the most power besides the king. Their power was hereditary which means it was from blood relations. The non-hereditary was only from somebody who had rose through no-familial means. The knight was to protect over the lands and watch the manor. In the movie William wants to become a knight, so he pretends to be one so he can compete in jousting competitions. He had to act better than his “squires”. Nobility was suppose to be of high authority and they usually thought they was better than other because they was higher in rank. They didn’t respect their helpers like the squires. He made it look like they were nothing to him when he was speaking to Jocelyn’s assistant about what he was wearing to the ball. Adhemar made it very clear where he stood. The wasn’t poor, but they wasn’t rich. They had to work for what they had. The squires would assist a knight in whatever they need. Wat, Roland, and Chaucer were William’s squires. They had to help him get ready for the jousting tournaments. They also had to get his outfit ready for the ball. They didn’t have a lot of money and they didn’t get a lot of respect.
