Specifically, with emotional abuse, a child can develop low self-esteem, self-worth, and increase the possibility of depression and anxiety (Font & Berger, 2014, p.538). With any form of abuse or maltreatment there is a high chance that the child will develop a negative relationship with their parents or caregivers. This negative relationship as a child can follow them throughout their life and cause problems with future relationships. It can also cause children to “persist with age-inappropriate habits and repetitive behaviour such as rocking and thumb-sucking” (Odhayani, Watson & Watson, 2013, p. 834). While the evidence shows that there is an emotional toll on the children who are abused there is research that is mentioned in Font and Berger (2014) shows that the children who have already have behavioural problems or mental illness are at greater risk to be abused or maltreated
