To begin, the only reason why we created this power plant was to make our lives easier. In my opinion, this power plant only makes our lives more stressful. This is because there is always a fear in the back of my mind that something catastrophic could happen to Three Mile Island. Once before, there has been an accident that involved radiation exposure at Three Mile Island specifically. Because of this exposure, Three Mile Island has a bad reputation with the public as being a dangerous power plant. After all, what stops Three Mile Island from having another exposure? There could even be a potentially worse crisis from Three Mile Island if it stays open. Alternatively, my opponent may reason that Three Mile Island didn’t cause any extreme damage, and nothing else has happened. My response to this statement is simple: anything can happen. We can’t definitively predict the future, so there is no way of knowing what the future holds for Three Mile Island. Do you really want to take the risk of Three Mile Island having a meltdown? If not, then we should shut Three Mile Island down. Another point I want to bring up is the main reason as to why Three Mile Island has been debated so much. …show more content…
Why should we keep a threat to all life in our town and pay for it, too? After all, the money to fund Three Mile Island isn’t going to appear out of thin air. We will have to pay to keep Three Mile Island open with our hard-earned money. In my opinion, it’s not worth it to pay for something that could cause death, sickness, or mutation for everyone we know. On the contrary, my opponent could argue that Three Mile Island is worth the cost, because of how cheap the energy is. To that statement, I argue that we have alternative energy sources that don’t cause death to innocent people. I would rather live in a world with less fear and lower taxes than one that could always threaten death and costs us more money. My final reason as to why we should shut down Three Mile Island is that we have alternative sources of energy. Although these sources of energy may be slightly more costly, they would be safer and less spacious than nuclear power plants. Even if Three Mile Island has routine safety checks and verified employees, places like Fukushima and Chernobyl did, too, and the results were still catastrophic. We can turn to several other sources to provide for us, like wind energy, solar energy, tidal energy, and many more. In their defense, my opponent may say that the infrastructure is already set for nuclear power plants, and we don’t need to wait for the
