Issues surrounding presidential constitutional authority as commander in chief implicate many of the most contested issues in constitutional law. Article I of the Constitution gives some war powers to the Congress — namely, the power to declare war — while Article II gives the president the power of Commander-in-Chief. After our tragic misadventure in Indochina, it was the general consensus that what happened was purely a result of presidential usurpation of the power of Congress to “declare War”. It was concluded that a necessary, legislative remedy to guard against future encroachment as well as protect the American people from presidential adventurism was needed. This legislation came in the form of the 1973 War Powers Resolution.…
This video is heavily opinion based and is biased towards the victims. This video will be useful in understanding both sides of the genocide and will aid in contrasting the point of views between the government and the…
The book that i’m reading is The Power of Un which is by Nancy Etchemendy so far I have not liked my book it’s not hard or a challenge and that’s why I don’t like it because I liked to be challenged in a new book. But the story is getting better right now Roxy was just hit by a truck and she is in the hospital with a coma.…
They were both fearful about what Rwanda would do if they interfered. The U.S. and UN were the only two forces at the time that could have stopped the genocide, but they did not out of fear. When the Rwanda Genocide ended 100 days later, nearly one million people were killed at the hands of army militias, friends, family, and neighbors alike. In a country with a population fewer than 8 million people, the number of people that died is overwhelming. The Rwandan Genocide evolved from European colonization.…
United States congress is a bicameral legislature with a lower chamber known as the House of Representatives and the higher being known as the Senate. Congress men and women have various rights and privileges to help them serve the nation the best way possible. Congress checks on the courts and on the President. The constitution gives very broad powers to the congress “All legislative powers herein granted shall be vested in a congress of the United States” (Politics in America) The founding fathers envisioned congress being the most powerful branch of government.…
Elie Wiesel's (1958), Night book, paints a vivid picture of the horror and inhumane actions against the Jews and other minorities during the Holocaust. Elie provides an account of the horrific atrocities that were bestowed upon him, love ones and many others. Throughout the reading of the Night, the idea that people could inflict such demoralizing and horrific acts upon another human being became difficult to grasp. In the camp, the Jews are subject to beatings and repeated humiliations (Elie, 1958). Pondering on the notion that human genocides have been part of history and that this horrific part of history has repeated itself throughout the world several times frightens me.…
Looking back to the expanding history of the world, phenomenons leaning towards discrimination, including genocides, have repeated themselves in history, shaping the present and future of humanity. One of the more well-known genocides is the Holocaust, which occurred during World War II under Adolf Hitler and claimed over six million lives, both Jewish and non-Jewish, from 1941 to 1945. The experience of the Holocaust is detailed in Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night, where he describes his life during the Holocaust and the troubles he had faced. A more recent yet similar event to the Holocaust was the Rwandan genocide in 1994, where one hundred days left thousands of Hutus slaughtered at the hands of the opposing Tutsis. Many sources, including an…
The world has suffered much indifference, and I have found that most people on this earth are happy to remain bystanders- blissfully ignorant and entirely uninterested in the matters of this world. For them, it is easier not to care, and to be so entirely absorbed in their own life that they don’t take the time to realize other people, or their individual problems. Indifference is the greatest epidemic. The fact that one is able to see a fellow being suffering, struggling, and walk past them without a glance is terrifying. People are caring less and less every day.…
Genocide occurred repeatedly after the holocaust in WW2. The Simple analysis cartoon created by Michael “SUDSEY” Sutherland, depicts the ineffectiveness of the U.N. to prevent genocide and fatal global conflict. In the panel on the left the U.N’s belief of engaging diplomatically without using armed force is portrayed. The Panel On the Right depicts the multiple genocides that have occurred since the U.N was formed in 1945, despite the U.Ns belief of diplomatic engagement.…
Michael Walzer makes a compelling argument in his article on global crisis, “the Argument about Humanitarian Intervention”. Walzer argues that humans have always been fighting each other and causing global problems. He claims that with today’s technology it has never been simpler to kill large numbers of people, if one has the resources of course. Walzer poses the question that in the event of a humanitarian crisis, such as cases of severe war crimes or ethnic cleansing, to what degree should the rest of the world respond? In Walzer’s article he discusses four major questions.…
Rwanda Barley 1 “In Rwanda one person's God is another persons Satan.” - Karl Maier. That quote from Karl Maier best explains the situation of war that took place in Rwanda from October 1st, 1990 to August 4th, 1993. The war continued into a horrible genocide/massacre until July, 1994. The Rwanda Civil War took place within the central African nation of the country.…
On a day to day basis, over the majority of the populous of the United States conduct their daily routines without a thought that their rights to freedom of religion, choice, speech or individuality could be taken away. Most have no clue of how the country is being protected or who is assisting in those efforts in trying to keep it protected. If I had to make an assessment, that assessment would be that the culture of Americans is complacent when it comes to their freedoms and liberties. When the people of the U.S. thinks of national protection, most think of the military fighting bad guys in or from foreign countries.…
The National Security Agency also known more commonly as the NSA is the agency in charge of monitoring information for foreign intelligence and counterintelligence. In other words they the watchdogs of the Nation. They make sure that there are no threats to our security. But recently a piece of information on how they retrieve information has come to light and people have begun to ask questions. The NSA should continue to survey the United states but under supervision and guidelines.…
Introduction On July 17, 1998 South Africa signed and proceeded to ratify, the Rome Statute of the International Court (Plessis, 2007). South Africa was one of the earliest supporters for setting up the court that would be known to try extreme cases of human rights violations. The International Criminal Court (ICC) was in fact created to take care of any atrocities and punishing them within the international borders, ones that cannot be dealt with within their own territories. The ICC stands as a last resort to any criminal events still standing, within the realm of where its jurisdiction lies (Plessis, 2007).…
The main problem in Rwanda with the United Nations was that just when their assistance was most needed, they were not permitted to intervene and all of the troops were being transferred and shifted around because the violence had escalated so high. It provides an example of how violent and dangerous a nation at war is, especially when it chooses genocide as the solution and how such deep rooted conflicts cannot be fixed by a peacekeeping force like the UN, but it only leaves one to wonder if anything…
