Walt Disney Network has been a part of almost every American’s childhood life. For 35 years, Disney has created animated fairy tale movies that were intended to be child-friendly and create positive images. After, close analyzation it is evident that instead Disney has produced distorted images of racism and segregation in their movies. I have selected the animated film, The Princess and the Frog (2005). In the film, Tiana represents The Other of African American’s in the 19th century. In The Princess and the Frog, Tiana is faced with issues of racism, privileged whites, and achieving status. These are all reoccurring problems that African American’s were faced with during slavery.
The Princess and the Frog was the very first Walt Disney film that featured an African American Princess. For centuries, Cinderella was seen as the epitome of a beautiful and elegant Princess. The typical Walt Disney princess is usually white, young, wealthy, and lives a carefree lifestyle. Although, Disney made an attempt to progress by identifying an African American as a Princess there is still an issue of racism in the film. Walt Disney chose to make Princess Tiana skin tone extremely dark as well as other African American characters in the film. In every slavery movie the African American slaves are always portrayed with a very darker skin complexion which isn’t a good representation of your average black person in America today.
