Racism in Disney movies is a problem especially in the movie “The Princess and the Frog”. Many children don’t understand what is happening in the movie but there are hidden messages that need to be addressed. Disney movies have influenced many children over the years, from making kids happy, sad and learn valuable life lessons. One lesson that needs to be addressed is racism in Disney movies, such as The Princess and the Frog, young children aren’t old enough to comprehend racism in Disney movies, but it is a problem that needs to be solved. The distinction that we make on races has nothing to do with genetic characteristics. Race in a short sentence is something that we don’t fully understand completely and that is why we talk so badly …show more content…
Going back to the movie “Peter Pan”, Native Americans appear in the movie and they are often referred to as ‘Indians’, or ‘Reds’, this is showing children that it is okay to call Native Americans, ‘Reds’ because they did so in Peter Pan and that is what makes it alright. In “The Princess and the Frog” this was the first Disney that had a black princess in it. Tiana, the main character is a black female who is poor and just making ends meet along with her mother who works for her best friends, which happen to be a wealthy man and his young daughter who is Tiana’s age. Throughout the story Tiana is not worried about finding a man to help her in life she believes she can do anything she wants as long as she sets her mind to it. Prince Naveen comes into the picture and finds himself turned into a frog, he then finds Tiana and thinks she is a Princess because she is dressed up for the occasion of a party and the wealth family’s house. When she kisses Naveen she also turns into a frog and the both set out to find a voodoo specialist who can fix everything for them. This movie is not racist in the way that it is the first movie that has a black female being the lead, it is also racist in the way it portrays New Orleans at this time. Such comments such as making gumbo, or different types of music that is made throughout the movie. Another comment that came up that makes this movies racist is that Tiana was not a princess throughout the whole movie, she only became a princess at the end when she marries Naveen while they are in frog form. Why couldn’t she be a princess throughout the whole movie? Snow White, Ariel, Sleeping Beauty all were princess at the beginning of the movie, why could Tiana in “Princess and the

I agree with Dorothy Robert one hundred and ten percent. Race is a political grouping. It is not a biological category, so why do we make it one? There is scientific evidence to prove that people of all races are the same. “Chimpanzees have races; honeybees have races; we don’t have races.”…

In the essay “What’s Happened to Disney Films?” author John Evans states the concerns of parents with regards to Disney motion pictures and how they are not as child-friendly as they were in the 1960’s compared to the 1990’s. Evans focus on the issues brought about in these films ranging from the use of profanities to violence, which should not be in Disney films. I understand the logic behind the authors position, he believes that the content of Disney films has taken a turn for the worse. Firstly, the author states that Disney has become a conglomerate having many subsidiaries and that it has had troubling effects on what Disney considers child-friendly.…

She was not fair skinned, but dark skinned. At the moment she felt inferior and knew she could never be like the “real” Cinderella (Hill, 1-2). If the portrayal of race in Disney movies has gotten so bad that even little girls like her felt her dream crushed because she was black and not white, then this depiction of race in media is a problem, especially in children’s…

Disney dominated the animation industry as it created the Disney Princess Empire beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the 1930’s. Many of the Princesses from Disney are the idealistic way that women were seen in the earlier dimensions of society. With America diverging from the idealistic role of a woman, Disney diverged in the same way by adding Tiana, the first hard working and ambitious African American to the Disney princess line- up. The Princess and the Frog is one of Disney Pixar’s extravagant films as it introduces an historical African American princess while exploring the traditions and cultures of New Orleans. As Disney tries to become a more diverse industry, it discovers a character in which Disney viewers are not…

In 1955, The Lady and the Tramp was released by Walt Disney. The movie was met with praise due to the family friendly humor and light hearted tone of the movie. In 2017, this movie still holds up as a classic Disney movie that warms the heart, yet has been picked apart and demonized as a racist and stereotypical period piece that has been taken out of context and framed in today’s elevated standards. The Lady and the Tramp, while featuring many racial stereotypes and potentially offensive themes, is still a movie intended for children. It frequently blurs the lines between satirical humor and blatant racism.…

Although I agree with you that race cannot be a biological kind, as there are no deep biological differences between each race, the morphological differences categorize each group into a racist social hierarchy. Historians have even highlighted that racial classification began around the seventeenth century, during the European slave trade, with the sole purpose of classifying the white population as the ‘norm’ and the slave population as the ‘other’ and enforce white privilege. Sally Hasslinger had even defined races are groups whose morphology and geographical associations determine how they are to be treated and viewed by society. That to be a part of a race means to be racialized, or in other words, to be “appropriately” systematically privileged or subordinate. This is similar to the caste system…

Essay Question: What is the difference between the way race is defined in the United States and in Brazil? List the Brazilian folk taxonomy of "tipos" and how to translate "tipos" into U.S. racial categories. Race is a myth. In another word, what looks like a difference in biological variability, is in fact, merely a difference in cultural classification. Similarly, anthropologist have stressed that U.S. racial groups are American cultural structures that depict the way Americans categorize people, rather than it be “a genetically determined reality (Spradley and McCurdy 200).”…

There are two concepts to race that biological anthropologists debate about. According to Matt Cartmill’s article “The Status of the Race Concept in Physical Anthropology” there are two cases to the concept of race; the case for the race concept and the case against the race concept. The race concept is what we as anthropologists use to define race. Do we use genetics, physical features, or geography to classify race is the debate in this article.…

Disney’s Zootopia is a production filled with a not so subtle hidden agenda. This movie focuses on specific discriminatory struggles that people face every day. Zootopia is a euphoric city where, “our ancestors first joined together in peace and declared that anyone could be anything” (Judy, Zootopia). All throughout time, people have been divided due to their differences. People who see others that are different from them will often immediately decide that they are “weird” and put those people lower than themselves. According to Linda Holtzman and Leon Sharpe in their passage, “Theories and Constructs of Race,” Race is just a social construct made by humans to exclude people based on what they look like, where they are from, their culture, etc. If scientists were to look at someone’s deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) compared to another person with, say, different colored skin, they would notice that there is not much of a difference between the two people. Therefore, as Holtzman and Sharpe say, “race is constructed socially, culturally, politically,…
