The Phoenix water services department conducts more than five million tests and measurements in the city 's treatment and distribution systems each year. Hundreds of reports are submitted also by the city each year to the EPA, ADEQ, and MCESD with a main purpose to provide phoenix residents with a safe and reliable supply of drinking water. However, Phoenix and its nearby cities (Chandler, Mesa, Tempe, Glendale, Scottsdale, and Peoria) have various sources of renewable fresh water. Surface water streams such as Salt, Gila, Verde, Agua Fria rivers, and the CAP canal network are the major city water sources and is about 98% of it. Dams located on these rivers, which flow from the mountains north and east of Phoenix, form reservoirs that provide a constant supply of fresh/renewable water. The 2% remaining of city water sources is from (20) city operated groundwater wells. Then the water from these various sources will be delivered to the one of the five Phoenix city’s water treatment plants. At the plants routinely monitors water quality data throughout regulating the contaminants during the water treatment process. Two terms will be enforced/followed at water treatment plants which are primary and secondary drinking water standards/limits (first one is enforceable/ protect human health, the second one not/ related to the aesthetic qualities of water), accordingly the contaminants will be categorized.
