which was the five tenets that John Winthrop expressed to other Puritans as one of their leaders. T.U.L.I.P. was an acronym that exposed the roots of Puritanism. These are total depravity of men, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of the saints (Campbell). This has influenced education at the roots. For example, total depravity is expressed through the idea that “the assumed sinful nature of a newborn guided the intensity in which Puritan parents sought to save their children from the wrath of hell” (Wegenast). Total depravity is the idea that man is born sinful because Adam sinned. Puritan education was also influenced by the idea of Congregationalism in the church which was founded by William Bradford and William Brewster (Wegenast). There have been many colleges based on their religion. The Puritans made a way for these schools to come forth. An example of a local religion based school is Blue Mountain College (Blue Mountain College - BMC History). Blue Mountain was founded on Baptist principles. Another example, would be Martin Methodist College. Martin Methodist College was founded on Methodist principles. Both of the schools were built around their religions. Churches have also created their own schools within its church know as private Christian schools. Home schooling has also been an effect and major impact from Puritan education. The Puritans were not going to leave any child uneducated. Laws were even put into place to ensure education to children, and that is still taking place today (Donnelly).
Puritan Education was a practice solely enforced to educate their children in the word and to raise them as the elect of their generation and to lead them to salvation. They accomplished this effort by adamantly implementing and implanting the rules of T.U.L.I.P. and Congregationalism which were laid down by their forefathers. It left an impact with the churches created; it impacted the way people see education and church for many generations to come and led the way for churches to begin their own schools for their young
