Puritans adopted Europe’s concept and forced it onto others. They are what we call hypocrites, because they did not like what happened to them in Europe but they came to the North and did it to others. In the areas where Puritans dominated, there was no religious freedom. And like England they too merged their church with politics. The first governor of Massachusetts was also a Puritan leader. Punishment by the Puritans included death, fines, beatings, imprisonments, and banishment. Roger Williams was banned from the colony because he was a dissenter or a non-believer of the Puritan church. The most well-known punishment/crime that took place in Puritan territory lasted months in 1692. This event was known as the Salem Witchcraft. The Salem Witchcraft was accusations of witchcraft against people and animals. The results of this trial was that hundreds of people were arrested, there was a few people who were killed including the crucial death of one elderly man, and there was the execution of two dogs who were thought to be witches. The Protestant religious group despised the Catholics so much that they created laws that banned Catholicism from public life. The Catholics were basically forced to worship privately. They were able to find a safe haven in Maryland since majority of the other colonies did not extend a welcoming hand. George Calvert is who I call the creator of the catholic colony and the ultimate peacemaker for Christianity beliefs. Calvert knew that the only way Catholicism could stay around for the long run is if Catholics recognized all religions and stay true to the concept of religious freedom. To ensure that religious peace was practiced in Maryland a decree of Calvert was used. In 1639 another document, the Maryland Assembly, gave all rights and liberties to all churches. Sadly, Maryland was the home for Catholics for a short period of time due to the corruption in England that eventually rolled over into the colony of Maryland. In 1692 Maryland was declared a royal colony and Anglicanism was the official religion of the state. Popes, priests, and masses could not be practiced in the early 1700s in Maryland.
