The Odyssey begins after the Trojan War; Odysseus who is the king of Ithaca is lost on a sea voyage after fighting in Troy, for about ten years. Years past while he is on his sea voyage home, the people of Ithaca believe Odysseus is dead, however in the story told by Homer, Odysseus is being held as a sex slave with the goddess Kalypso. Since Odysseus has angered the Greek Sea God Poseidon, Poseidon refuses to let Odysseus get home without some hardships. Meanwhile back in Ithaca, Penelope who is Odysseus’s wife is being bombarded with 107 suitors who wish to marry her. As Odysseus sets sail home to Ithaca he is faced with many obstacles, he loses his entire crew and is forced to swim close to one hundred miles to reach Ithaca. Odysseus makes it safely to shore and with the help of the Greek goddess Athena, he is able to sneak back into the palace dressed as a beggar. Although Penelope doesn’t know that Odysseus has returned home, Odyssey’s servants however recognize him and decide to help him. Penelope decides that she is ready to remarry she sets up a challenge. To win Penelope’s hand in marriage her suitors must string Odysseus’s bow and shoot it through twelve axes. While everyone fails, Odysseus makes an attempt to complete the challenge and he succeeds. He disregards his outfit and reveals his true identity, with the help of Athena, Telemachus (his son) and servants; they are able to wipe out all the suitors.
