The Admirable Odysseus
Homer tells The Odyssey using Odysseus as an admirable character. In the beginning of The Odyssey, Odysseus has to leave his son and his wife to fight in the Trojan War that lasted ten years. When the Trojan War was over, it took Odysseus ten years to get home. In total, Odysseus was away from his home for twenty years. Odysseus faced many hardships on his way home. Through these hardships, Odysseus proved to be courageous, loyal, and a leader.
Odysseus shows courageousness by not backing down from anything. He faces his problems head on. An example of courageousness shown by Odysseus is, “I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops as more than natural force nerved them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it, deep in his carter eye, and I leaned on it turning it as a shipwright turns a drill in planking, having men below to swing the two-handled strap that spins it in the groove.” (9. 370-375). Odysseus was courageous enough to go against a beast as a big as the Cyclops and stab him in the eye. He did what he had to do to get him and his men out of Cyclops’ cave. …show more content…
Odysseus shows loyalty throughout the story. Loyalty is also shown back to Odysseus. The author writes, “they longed to stay forever, browsing on that native bloom, forgetful of their homeland. I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called the rest: ‘all hands aboard; come, clear the bench and no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home.’” (9. 210-215).
