Hiring the right employee for the job can be difficult. Employers are faced with multiple competing factors they must consider when hiring to fill an open position. Employers should first consider the company when making hiring decision to ensure it remains effective and efficient so it can be successful in a competitive marketplace. Therefore, when it began the hiring process to fill open police officer positions, they chose to administer the Wonderlic Personnel Test. The test measures the cognitive ability of the test taker and applies a score. Officers were selected who achieved a score between 20 and 27. There was one applicant, however, who scored a remarkable 33. That applicant was not awarded a position based on the police department's view that the applicant was too bright and would soon lose interest in the job and leave; thus, negatively impacting the police department's concern for employee retention (2015). This view is reasonable as employees who are not challenged can become bored and/or unhappy and may seek more mentally stimulating employment elsewhere. A. Green of US News and World Report notes that overqualified candidates are viewed by potential employers as those who do not really understand what the job entails, will be bored, won't be happy working for a manager with less experience, and will soon leave when something better comes around (2013). The fact that the candidate had such a high intelligence score makes me question why a city police department was this candidate's ideal choice for employment instead of another area of law enforcement such as the FBI or CIA which would likely be more intellectually satisfying …show more content…
