Welcome to the most hyped club of the century! Here you’re welcome to hit it off at the dance floor or cool down in the chill room. Intensify you club experience with 3,4- methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) or what is better known as ecstasy. Let’s get down to business and talk about the popularity of this drug, along with its destructive nature. Zooming into the brain, neurons release chemical substances that are called neurotransmitters. These chemicals are responsible for daily life and basic bodily functions. Ecstasy primarily targets many parts of the brain that contain the neurotransmitter called serotonin. Serotonin can be found in parts of the hindbrain and the midbrain. Because serotonin is found in these areas, ecstasy can heavily effect their functions, whether they are harmful or pleasurable. For example, the hippocampus and the cortex are responsible for both learning and memory; thus, MDMA can damage one’s learning ability and ability to remember. Serotonin is associated with functions such as mood, aggression, appetite, pleasures, sleep-wake cycle and even dreaming. Studies concerning the effects of ecstasy have displayed its ability to impair basic functions, even to the extent of permanent damage. However, ecstasy does not limit its target to just serotonin, but also to other neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine. The dopamine transmitter is the chief suspect of addiction in drug users due to its role in reward-motivated behavior.…
