Suspense is commonly felt while reading “The Monkey’s Paw”. Suspense is often used to create tension or mystery in the story. In the story “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W Jacobs, the author creates suspense in many ways. Three ways he creates suspense in the story was through setting, irony and foreshadowing. One way W.W Jacobs creates suspense in “The Monkey’s Paw” was through setting. In the first place, the setting contributes to the suspense in the story was how the weather was cold, dark and rainy as said in the story “the night was cold and wet”-374, bad things always happen at night. In addition, another suspenseful part due to the setting, was when Mr. White was listening to the spooky, howling, wind “hark at the wind”-374. The last way the setting makes the story more suspenseful is when Mr. White was complaining about where they live “of all the beastly, slushy, out-of-the-way places to live, this is the worst…only two houses on the road are let including ours”-374. Alas, these are all examples of a setting that may build up suspense in a story. Terrible things always happen in …show more content…
One example of foreshadowing in the story was “I don’t see the money and I bet I never shall.”-378. Another example is “… how would 200lbs hurt you father?”-378. One more example of foreshadowing in the story is “he sat alone... staring at the fire...seeing faces in it”-Herbert-380. These are all examples of foreshadowing used in “The Monkey’s Paw”. The first example is foreshadowing that something bad may happen in the future to Herbert and he really will not see the money. The second example is foreshadowing that maybe the 200lbs will hurt his father. The third example is foreshadowing that something bad may happen to Herbert in the future regarding the paw and the faces are a sign. These are all examples of foreshadowing W.W Jacobs used in “The Monkey’s Paw”to show

The four techniques that I noticed mostly in “The Monkey’s Paw” were music, lighting, close-up shots, and high angle shots. The music made the film suspenseful, and it showed a bit of foreshadowing as well. When the lighting went dark, it made the film mysterious. We were able to see the shadow of the creature when it knocked on the door. In the beginning, there was a close-up shot of of Mr. and Mrs. White.…

Mary McCarthy, an American author, once said: “We all live in suspense from day to day; in other words, you are the hero of your own story.” This means, each day everyone wakes up and they do not know what is going to happen, but at the end of each day they have written a story about that day and what has happened. The English III classes read “The Minister’s Black Veil” by Nathaniel Hawthorne and “The Pit and the Pendulum” by Edgar Allan Poe; these stories were written during the Dark Romanticism period. These stories were both on the dark side which leads the characters to do somethings that were a little unusual and they are not sure how everything is going to turn out. When developing a theme, an author uses many different techniques and tools to emphasize it to their readers. In order to accomplish this, they may use certain aspects of the story, such as setting, symbols, motifs, mood, or tone, or may even use the story itself, including the characters, how they interact with each other and the world around them, and what they do and say. William W. Jacobs displays his existentialist nature through themes of freedom, responsibility, and death. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” Jacobs demonstrates these themes progressively through his characters and their actions after a cursed talisman eradicates all limitations. Arash Farzaneh defines existentialism as the measurement of humankind’s “responsibility when facing a universe devoid of laws.” Fundamentally unbound by religious conviction, humankind is required to take responsibility for their actions accordingly if they are to be truly free (Farzaneh). Jacobs establishes through his character Mr. White that humanity must accept responsibility for their own choices, regardless of the consequences that may follow.…

“Be careful what you wish for, you may receive it” is not only an age old phrase, but also the main idea of W.W. Jacobs’ short story, “The Monkey’s Paw”. In this short story, a fairly average family is introduced to a ‘magical’ monkey paw that has the power to grant any 3 wishes. However, when the family is warned that there are horrible consequences to wishing on the paw, they decide to use it anyways and it costs them. The story is filled with many symbols such as the way Mr.White plays the chess game, the number 3, and the monkey’s paw. It is through these symbols that W.W. Jacobs sets up the problem, raises the stakes, and introduces a main character.…
