The Mentos experiment with Diet Coke is a world famous experiment that people all over the world love to see and recreate. People have tried many different ways to try and increase this amazing reaction by using pressure, fuel, chemicals, and all sorts of stuff to get a better result than last. But what makes the soda fizz into a huge soda volcano? It has to do with a process called nucleation. “Nucleation is the initial process that occurs in the formation of a crystal from a solution, a liquid, or a vapour, in which a small number of ions, atoms, or molecules become arranged in a pattern characteristic of a crystalline solid, forming a site upon which additional particles are deposited as the crystal grows”, says the editors of Encyclopedia Britannica. When a Mento is placed in soda the tiny microscopic pockets on the Mento start forming little carbon dioxide bubbles. This is taking place all over the special candy. Millions of carbon dioxide bubbles are formed and are rapidly floating to the top where, eventually, the bubble sprays out of the bottle and that is how a geyser is formed.(www.ScienceKids.com) …show more content…
The reaction that takes place when a Mento is dropped was thought to be a chemical reaction. Researchers have now found that because of nucleation it makes it a physical reaction. The Mentos are considered to be a rough candy because they have so many pits in them. This is because they have been sprayed with over 40 microscopic layers of liquid sugar. This makes it to where there are a lot of places where carbon dioxide bubbles can form.
