The Mayor's Youth Council

Decent Essays
Mayor Kip Holden, the mayor of Baton Rouge, has had a significant influence on me and my choices. Mr. Holden has been the mayor of Baton Rouge since 2005, and continues to be reelected because of his good policies. He’s hardworking, honest, and willing to listen to the people. He strives for the best of my city, and continues to lead our town to success. Additionally, every year Mr. Holden develops a group called the Mayor’s Youth Council. I have been honored to be one of the few students from my high school to join the council through a lengthy application process, and I currently serve on the council to create a better Baton Rouge, a vision shared by all of us on the council. We try to seek solutions to problems we identify within the youth

My week at the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Maryland Girls State program was an eye-opening occasion. I went to Girls State knowing little to nothing about the government in the state of Maryland. I had no interest in running for any type of government office. Girls State was originally just a place to get away from my parents for a week, but once I got there I realized it was so much more. The first day was not a full day because of registration but it felt like it because of all the sessions we were in and the elections for city government.…

The first study that implemented this program took place at the Annsville Youth Center, in New York (Goldstein, 4). The study was conducted on 60 youths, in which a small group (24) received the intervention in ART, the second group (24) were given a “brief discussion” this allowed for Goldstein and his colleagues, to see if the children had the skills in them, but were just not using them, and the last group (12) received no intervention or instructions (Goldstein, 4). The goal of the study was to see how effective ART was in the center, “ it looked at skill acquisition, minimal skill transfer, extended skill transfer, anger control enhancement, and impulsive reduction” (Goldstein, 4). At the end of the 10-week study, the children that under…
