Personal Narrative-The Band

The spotlight is in my eyes. The hubbub dies down to an anticipatory, judgmental silence, daring me to break it. I look back, making sure the band is ready. Thumbs up: it’s time to roll. I tap my foot to the rhythm. 1, 2, 3, 4. The first words soar out of my mouth - the note’s a high A, perfectly in tune, - the band is in sync, - the music is surrounding me, - the crowd is going wild, - I feel ALIVE.
The song passes in a whirlwind of emotions, passion, excitement, crowd chants, rhythms, and melodies. As I sing the last note, a sustained falsetto E, everything falls into an awe-struck silence. I look down and see my mother smiling proudly at me, and I am taken back to where it all began.
Rumour has it that I have been singing since the day I was born. In truth, my first experience with vocal music came at the age of two. I had listened to a song on TV, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with it, singing it over and over. My parents knew from that day that I had musical potential, and they encouraged me

Just then, the smell of hot chili drifted in from the nearby kitchen. And so the “We Care We Share” initiative was born. I took charge of our new project, which was to serve hot food to the homeless once every month, and helped make it a reality. It was only after the initiative was running that I was commended on my leadership and I realized my aptitude for it. I decided that I would take leadership roles throughout high school in order to help serve the less fortunate. KEY Club, a service and fundraising club, became my focus, and I travelled up the ranks to become the school’s external affairs manager and the service committee chair of the Eastern Canada District. As I introduced more extra-curricular activities into my life, organization became more important -- and I was shocked to see how much it helped me save

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

A few years ago, one of my good friends sent me some songs to listen to by a band that I had never heard of called Twenty One Pilots. Their sound was completely different from anything I had ever heard before, containing some rap, a ukulele, and a piano all in one album. No one song sounded like the other, but they all contained one common element: some type of deep message hidden in the lyrics. At first, I rejected the band, not liking the way the music sounded, but when I listened again, really paying attention to the lyrics this time, I fell in love immediately. Somehow, these short 3 minute songs by this almost totally unknown duo had utterly changed my entire perspective on life, and on the effects of music in particular.…

Serving as Theta Iota Chapter President sharpened my leadership skills and taught me to engage those around me through positive encouragement. Before my term I assumed that projects always go as intended—volunteers are on time, organizations are cooperative, and ideas flow smoothly into reality. While this is ideal, the actuality is that difficulty can arise at any moment and people often need support. During our Chapter’s annual “Day of Service,” we organized over 100 volunteers to engage with Tucson non-profits throughout a single day. Unfortunately, the event started poorly: the member bringing breakfast suffered from a flat tire, the microphone shorted, and one of the non-profits had to cancel their event.…

Her perky alert nipples stand hard like two pink Bisoprolol pills. Her Kawaii shaped viridian eyes will end up staring at me with a concurrent void of intimacy and distance, when it's time to Man yoghurt on her phizog. Her Cupid- bow lips joined by ridges of a defined philtrum, which I'm intimately acquainted with by all measures of fellatio, although never shared a husband's peck that's systematically planted on a wife's ever increasing flabby cheek; when leaving for the good-old nine to five. There was also a lack of nasolabial folds; one could surmise a vacuous personality that seldom laughed in many years; but in contrast to the lower regions of this face canvas, a glabellar was indented with the number 11; an indication of fake and real orgasms, deep throat gagging, and other numerous transgressions this mug has withstood on the meat screen. Ever since I was a kid, I always found a rhythm on things. Whenever I heard the heartbeat from a toy heart that my teacher had in her classroom, in my head I always added an extra beat to it, always turned it into something musical. I always thought it was because I used to watch the Nickelodeon kids show called “The Fresh Beat Band” every single day when I got home from school, so I let slide. I knew that wasn’t the real reason because it didn’t feel like it was, but I never looked deep into my abilities, never did anything with it no matter how big it was and no matter how it would change my life. At that time I thought I was a waste of talent because whenever I realized I was good at something I never really did anything about it, until one day.…

For my 13th birthday all I wanted was concert tickets to see System of A Down. My family came together and decided to buy the tickets so I could bring two guests, one being a friend and the other had to be a parent. I remember receiving the tickets months later and was so shocked because I thought everyone had forgotten about them, which was close to impossible with all the nagging I did. I had to wait until July for the show, but I was already planning in June.…
