The magnificent structural and architectural remains that still predominate through the forest canopy are testimony to the great achievements made by the Mayan culture in Mesoamerica. The geographic range of the Mayans include portions of the
Mexican states ofChiapas and Tabasco, the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, Belize, and the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador (Coe 1966:17). The area in which the ancient Maya lived and modem Maya peoples still inhabit is called Mesoamerica, yet this area is not limited to just Mayan
