If you were to ask a group of people why they think the legal drinking age should be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen, you may hear things like: “If you’re old enough to fight in a war, you are old enough to drink,” or “If you’re eighteen you are an adult, therefore you should legally be allowed to drink.” However, these statements do not prove why a person should be able to drink. The military takes eighteen year olds because they are still maturing and developing, and can easily be transformed into soldiers. In fact, while someone is at military basic training, alcohol is forbidden to come on base by soldiers and authorities. The other argument towards lowering the drinking age is arguing that if you are eighteen then you are an adult. Legally, yes, you are an adult, however there are laws that have been put in place to protect you until they have developed enough to participate in such activities such as drinking.
Lowering the legal drinking age from twenty-one to eighteen has been talked about and considered for years. In July 2008, over a hundred of college professors and other education officials gathered to reevaluate the legal drinking age and start the Amethyst Initiative. The United States has a higher drinking age (twenty-one) than Canada (eighteen), Mexico (eighteen), and European countries (sixteen).
