To Drink or Not To Drink: Legality is the Question
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” Mark Twain said this, and when it comes to being an adult the legal age is 18 in the United States. However, the legal drinking age is 21 three years older than the legal age of adulthood. Being a legal adult has its perks along with a couple of downsides, however the main factor about becoming an adult is that one in trusted with more privileges and freedoms as long as one toes the line and accepts the consequences of their actions. A legal adult is given the opportunity to take part in numerous activities that are exclusively for adults such as: voting, getting married without parental consent, the eligibility to enter into a legally binding contract, and joining the U.S. military. A lawful adult should be given all of the previously mentioned freedoms, and the option to consume alcohol. The U.S. should change the legal drinking age back to 18 because there are fewer drunk driving accidents in countries with 18 as the lawful drinking age, the majority of the world has 18 as their lawful drinking age and a licit adult should be endowed with all of the rights and privileges of being an adult if they are required to be held accountable as one for their actions. One of the most prominent of the freedoms is the ability to join the United States military. When one turns 18 they have the opportunity to join arguably the bravest force in the U.S..
