In the United States the legal drinking age is 21 years of age, we have learned that this is the legal age to get alcoholic beverages. Teenagers do not really follow this law, I know several teenagers that drink underage and drink way too much. Why is the drinking age set to 21 while most countries around the world the drinking age is 16 or even younger? In the United States the drinking age is not made by the federal government but by each state. According to, Choose Responsibility, “Despite this, all states abide by Legal Age 21. Why? Because the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which was passed in 1984, will withhold a percentage of federal highway funding from any state that chooses an age below 21.” The main purpose of the laws proposed and some that were passed in 1984 was to reduce drunk driving. Others laws that were passed in 1984 were “…increased enforcement, mandatory sentencing, mandatory seat belt usage, .08 legal BAC limit, and a massive public information campaign-have been extremely successful in both reducing the instance of driving under the influence and alcohol-related deaths on the road.” (Choose Responsibility) From 1969 to 1975 before the law was ever introduced, when teenagers could legally drink the fatality rate decreased by nearly 20%. “More lives have been saved by seatbelts and airbags in the past two years than lives that have been saved from this law since 1984.
