Gregor Case Study Autocratic Leadership

In this case study, two officers under the leadership of Officer Maynard, have about a year left until retirement. They seem to have lost all motivation to perform their duties to the highest standard and have become a distraction on the shift and to their fellow officers as a result. Both officers appear to have also decided to distance themselves from their fellow officers and basically skate until it’s time for their retirement. It appears as both of these officers have lost their motivation after years of productive social and professional work with their co-workers. Officers can be motivated by one need today, and tomorrow the need may reappear or a new need may become evident. In other words, as the situation changes, the individual’s wants and desires can change (More & Miller, 2015). The lack of motivation from both officers could be for several reasons. It seems to already view employees as trying to avoid responsibility and requires constant supervision to keep them motivated. Based on the officer’s previous work and social history within the department, it doesn’t appear that this theory is the case for this particular situation. Sergeant Maynard’s management style should be one that fosters productivity based on allowing his two officers the feeling of accomplishing something that’s exciting and not the usual routine that they seem to have fallen in. Sergeant Maynard’s style should be geared more towards McGregor’s theory Y than X. A careful analysis of the factors clearly suggests that management should respond to the employees with an enlightened strategy. The managerial perspective will have to be creative, discover new organizational principles, and develop new means of directing employees. It should be acknowledged that while the perfect organization might not be attainable, there is certainly room for improvement (More & Miller,
