Hosseini:
• His first book, The Kite Runner, focused on men and the male perspective. To get the full 360, he decided to write a book from a females perspective. He wanted people to hear both male and female sides of his native country, Afghanistan.
• He took a trip to Afghanistan. It wasn’t a trip intended to be about “researching a book” but to educate himself on the culture and lives of the people. About a year later, he began to form A Thousand Splendid Suns. He compiled all the stories from the people he visited and tried to create two female leads to reflect the hardships the people face in Afghanistan.
• Hosseini was a doctor before he became a writer. Although he doesn’t believe the two professions directly relate, both of his books contain medical information. The same skills needed to interview a patient, he used to interview women on his trip to Afghanistan.

It teaches grade one through six and educates quite a few females. Even though there have been threats made against the schoolgirls, they continue to go. They try to better their education. Although there are people who believe female education is not in the best interest of the country, Hosseini does. His book speaks to that. Laila desperately wants to stay in school. Her father wants her to as well. However, because of bombings and wars, she is forced to cut her education short. Hosseini is trying to prevent that.
• The illiteracy rate in Afghanistan is very high. It ranges from 70 to 75 percent among men. The illiteracy rate among women is even higher. Unfortunately, that means the average Afghani citizen probably haven’t read his book. However, of the people that can read, Hosseini believes many support his book. Even if they might not agree completely with the accuracy of the book, many are happy Afghanistan has issues that are being recognized. Some even take pride in a book written about their
