Learning to work effectively with families has a crucial role to play in educational setting. Arthur et al. (2012) states that sociocultural theories emphasise on how children learn through interaction within their families and communities and how families influence children’s learning. Therefore, it is vital for the educator to understand each student for who they are and accept who they are and their families (Arthur et. al., 2012). Educators are not only working with the child but also working with the child’s family (DEEWR, 2015). It is important not to see family’s differences as a problem but view it positively as it will help the educators to understand their students. The conference will provide thorough information about children’s learning and development. The conference takes out a good understanding of the child’s development (NYC Department of Education, 2009). A parent conference is normally scheduled at the educator’s invitation, but sometimes parents ask for a conference. There are several reasons for parent conferences. Some of these reasons are to discuss children’s progress at school, where they are at on their learning and what they are learning; share about their child’s social and emotional development and share some of authentic assessment information about their child and sometimes discuss children’s behaviour (NYC Department of Education, 2009). According to Marsh (2008) that few parents do not have skills such as problem-solving and communication skills to be effective participants, many parents choose not to participate and sometimes school staff are not confident to consider parent-participation activities. To resolve these issues, parents need to be encouraged, empowered, and should be given the chance to express their own needs (Marsh, 2008).
