The way we sense things is how we perceive the world around us, and to also make sense of it all. The sensory organs I chose to explain are the nose, tongue, and ears and how they connect to the brain for our perception.
As we inhale the scent of something, the molecules reach the receptor cells high in both nasal cavities. Then the axons from millions of these receptors carry nerve impulses directly to the olfactory bulb. The olfactory bulb is the smell center of the brain. From there, records are taken and the olfactory bulb transmits these impulses to the temporal lobes of the brain where they become experienced as smell. “This results in our ability to recognize around 10,000 different smells,” (Zou, Li, & Buck, 2005). The vibrating eardrum causes the anvil, hammer, and stirrup (bones within the ear) to strike each other and amplify the vibrations to the oval window and onto the fluid in the coiled cochlea of the inner ear. Now, the moving fluid sets the basilar membrane, inside the cochlea, moving. The Corti, on the top of the basilar, moves too. Inside the Corti, thousands of tiny receptor cells are topped by a bundle of hair-like-fibers. As the basilar membrane vibrates, the fibers bend to stimulate the receptor cells, sending a signal to the afferent nerve endings, and join to form the auditory nerve. Humans have what is called selective attention, which is basically how humans discriminate between what is irrelevant and important and is also influenced by motivation. Humans also have perpetual expectancy, which is how we perceive the world based on past experiences, cultures, and our biological make up. The way we perceive things in our world is influenced by how our sensory connections. Our perception is how we interpret our sensations and that is how we make sense of the world around
