From my work in Jigsaw Kerry (an adolescent mental health support service) I was always aware that mental health issues where due to more than just biological influences. Oddly enough it wasn’t until the idea of the biopsychosocial model was presented to me that I began to comprehend the other factors that could lead to these issues. We debated situations in which want to aid a patient in some way, but know, professionally, that it would be either inappropriate or incorrect to do so. One such situation which we were discussed was that of an elderly man wished to have his GP give her signature to certify that his eyesight was of the standard required. After being tested the GP found that the gentleman’s eyesight was not adequate, but only by the smallest of margins. Even though the GP was aware that the elderly patient’s eyesight was not quite up to the standard recommended, she showed compassion for the man. The doctor knew that the only time this man used his car was on his daily trip into the village from his rural home to buy the newspaper. Could she deny an elderly patient of his single outlet and risk causing isolation and depression? For these reasons the man’s GP signed his cert. Although she knew it was wrong to deceive the authorities in this way, her moral conscience was more important to her and to her patient in this situation. It is in discussing situations like this that I find I am growing into the professional I will one day become. I see that numerous factors that we must analyse when making decisions and the repercussions of these
