After establishing effective principal’s key functions and leadership, principals must work with teachers to increase their effectiveness. Principals have to be supportive to veteran teachers and especially new teachers starting their first year. To increase children’s academic success, principals have to understand the issues and concerns of the new teachers, meet their needs and help them be successful educators. Based on data and research done by The Clearing House Association, it was said that there were five major areas of concern such as “relationships with students, staff and families, workload, time management, knowledge of curriculum, evaluation and grading and issues of autonomy and control” (Roberson & Roberson, 2009). Coming into the Education field, teachers must be prepared to work with families, children, and other qualified professionals. To be an effective teacher, the NC Department of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education developed six professional teaching standards. These standards are used as an educator evaluation system. It was designed to “promote effective leadership, quality teaching, an student learning while enhancing professional practice and leading to improved instruction” (State Board of Education & NC Department of Instruction, 2008-2009). Pertaining to the academic success of students, standard one talks about teachers demonstrating leadership. This involves teachers advocating positive changes in policies and practices affecting student learning and participates in implementing initiatives to improve education. Standard two encompasses teachers creating a respectful environment for an assorted population of students. Teachers create an environment that is inviting, respectful, inclusive and flexible. Teachers embrace diversity and consider and incorporate different points of view. Teachers adapt to the special needs of children, work together with families and maintain high expectations of students. Standard three contains the teacher knowledge of what they teach. They make sure it is developmentally appropriate, make sure the material is relevant, and promote global awareness. Standard
