ISLLC Standards

In order to be a great principal, one needs to understand the standards that are set for them. Missouri’s department of Education has their own six standards, which are based on the ISLLC standards. These standards help principals be better leaders and also keep focus of the work they do. The first standard is about creating and implementing a vision and a mission that is shared with staff and stakeholders. The principal should work closely to make sure that staff buy into the vision. It should also be revised as needed. As a leader, I would create a leadership team to help me develop this step. This would create more buy in from the school staff. I have written mission and vision statements, but having ideas from other staff would be more …show more content…
I am a big advocate for great professional developments. I have found that the best principals are those that help you find trainings in areas where you need to grow. After training, one comes back inspired and with new ideas. As a principal, I would focus on outside trainings, but also checking in with teachers to make sure that what they have learned is used in the classroom. Also teachers would be encouraged to present to staff what they have learned at trainings. The third standard is about managing the operational systems of the school. This requires a leader to have good relationships with staff and students. As a leader, one needs to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable doing their role. I would assign a committee to help me with student discipline to help teacher workload. I would also make sure that teachers get training with behavior management as well as having clear steps for dealing with behaviors. If teachers feel supported and trained, they are more likely to deal with behaviors in the classroom and help reduce behavior issues throughout the …show more content…
This standard is a great way role modeling for others. One needs to remember that everything they do should be with the intention of helping the students but also keeping in mind all the other stakeholders of the school and community. I feel comfortable with this standard. I need to keep in mind that all the work I do is always for the interest of students. The last standard is similar to the previous five standards. The ISLLC states the following: “understanding, responding to, and influencing the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context” (ISLLC, 2008). DESE department calls it professional development. This is a standard I was not too sure about, as I think it was touched upon in the other standards. Overall, I am glad I have learned about these standards. I was not aware of these standards. I would make an effort to focus on a few at a time and set personal goals to become well-rounded in each one of the standards. I know I can be good at the standards, but I would use my resources as well as a great leadership team to help me make sure that each standard is met. I am very open about asking for help when I need it, and as a leader I would do the same to show others that I am not the only one with all the answers and that I am always looking to

Clear and concise communication about school goals must be consistent and resolute. As noted in the article, What Makes or Breaks a Principal, "The most effective principals operate from a value system that places high priority on people and relationships. The principal 's person -to-person relationships reverberate throughout the school culture" (Donaldson et al, 2009).
