ISLLC Standards

In order to be a great principal, one needs to understand the standards that are set for them. Missouri’s department of Education has their own six standards, which are based on the ISLLC standards. These standards help principals be better leaders and also keep focus of the work they do. The first standard is about creating and implementing a vision and a mission that is shared with staff and stakeholders. The principal should work closely to make sure that staff buy into the vision. It should also be revised as needed. As a leader, I would create a leadership team to help me develop this step. This would create more buy in from the school staff. I have written mission and vision statements, but having ideas from other staff would be more …show more content…
I am a big advocate for great professional developments. I have found that the best principals are those that help you find trainings in areas where you need to grow. After training, one comes back inspired and with new ideas. As a principal, I would focus on outside trainings, but also checking in with teachers to make sure that what they have learned is used in the classroom. Also teachers would be encouraged to present to staff what they have learned at trainings. The third standard is about managing the operational systems of the school. This requires a leader to have good relationships with staff and students. As a leader, one needs to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable doing their role. I would assign a committee to help me with student discipline to help teacher workload. I would also make sure that teachers get training with behavior management as well as having clear steps for dealing with behaviors. If teachers feel supported and trained, they are more likely to deal with behaviors in the classroom and help reduce behavior issues throughout the …show more content…
This standard is a great way role modeling for others. One needs to remember that everything they do should be with the intention of helping the students but also keeping in mind all the other stakeholders of the school and community. I feel comfortable with this standard. I need to keep in mind that all the work I do is always for the interest of students. The last standard is similar to the previous five standards. The ISLLC states the following: “understanding, responding to, and influencing the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context” (ISLLC, 2008). DESE department calls it professional development. This is a standard I was not too sure about, as I think it was touched upon in the other standards. Overall, I am glad I have learned about these standards. I was not aware of these standards. I would make an effort to focus on a few at a time and set personal goals to become well-rounded in each one of the standards. I know I can be good at the standards, but I would use my resources as well as a great leadership team to help me make sure that each standard is met. I am very open about asking for help when I need it, and as a leader I would do the same to show others that I am not the only one with all the answers and that I am always looking to

While reviewing the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards, I developed my own ideas on how each standard would apply in my own classroom. The standards allowed me to understand how to run a classroom, in order to benefit my students. Each standard goes into detail how a teacher could incorporate them into their classroom. With that being said, they leave room for interpretation. This way each teacher who reads them is able to interpret and apply them to their classroom. All six standards are great and have value, but there are some characteristics that were left out. I will explain my interpretation and give examples for my classroom. However, I will add my own standards to the list. With the NC standards and my own, my students will…

The ISLLC School Leadership Profile was an important activity in this journey, my overall score of 1 shows that I still have much to learn about the role of an educational leader. My vision assignment actually helped me to pinpoint leadership responsibilities in designing, revising, and carrying out the school’s mission and vision. I see now that education leaders are held accountable and are uniquely responsible for developing and implementing a vision of learning in order to guide decisions and actions. As a leader, I will be charged to guide a process for developing and revising a shared vision, a strong mission, and comprehensive goals that are not just appropriate but…

There is an evaluation process the principals are taken through during the year to confirm that they are following policies and administrative procedures correctly. There is training provided for all administrators to continually learn and improve in their leadership role. The principals are held accountable to make sure they are following the negotiated master contract as well. There are requirements listed in this document such as scheduling of instructional minutes, the number of minutes of recess allotted, the way teachers can take time off, etc. The principals are held accountable to make sure they are compliant with the state guidelines as well. When an infraction or misstep happens, the principal is first talked to by district leadership and offered a refresher about the policies. A second infraction results in a write up being submitted to the superintendent and placed in their file. A third infraction results in meeting with district leadership to write an improvement plan together that lists out exact steps that will be taken to improve (Coughenour, personal communication,…
