Principal Shadowing Case Study

Principal Shadowing Upon guidance and recommendations from the SPA internship team, three head building principals from the Wyoming Valley West School District were sensibly selected. Having an overwhelmingly extensive amount of time in public education, the three principals had a combined total of over 60 years in the school district and with nearly 30 years of that time in administration. Respectively so, they are all in charge of the three largest buildings in the school district, too. Similarly, each building houses nearly the same number of students; however, they are vastly unique in their own way. Facilitating observation of all grade bands – pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade, this project provided invaluable insights across the strata of public education. Beginning with middle school, proceeding with elementary, and concluding with high school, it was a progressive change conducted one full-day each over a span of three weeks. In addition, the Concentration of Public School Students Eligible for Free or Reduced-Price Lunch (2017) has set parameters for economically disadvantaged schools based on the percentage of “Free or Reduced-Price Lunch” in the table below.

All within the counties of Luzerne and Lackawanna, the outlining area has three major metropolitans – Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Hazelton, which are the only three school districts larger than Wyoming Valley West School District. Moreover, the school district has nearly 4,600 students with almost 75% of them being white, around 64% economically disadvantaged, and almost 20% special education, as indicated by the Pennsylvania Department of Education Performance Profile
