I completed this activity by reading the article to gain a better understanding of the significance of effective communication within interdisciplinary teams. After reading the article I highlighted the main points from the literature and completed a summary of the article. I completed this by gathering all the main points from each article and summarizing the information on one page. This summary page included instructions for the use of SBAR tool, an evaluation of effectiveness of a verbal report, stating different levels of assertiveness and 5-step advocacy directions. I have this sheet with me for every shift at placement and I used it to prepare myself before verbal reports such as writing down in SBAR format what I wanted to say for end of shift reports etc… I felt that having this summary sheet, helped me to ease my anxiety about verbally reporting to other health care professionals as I feel more prepared and ready to report. This activity supports my commitment to continuing competency because it has successfully helped me to incorporate the effective communication strategies learned from the literature into my practice so I can improve my skills and enhance patient care and outcomes. I also found that with the increase in verbal repots I gave, there was a decrease in my nervousness/anxiety level.
